Definition

Realistic means practical and achievable under current conditions. Real, by contrast, means genuine and authentic, not fake. Realistic focuses on feasibility and practical possibility. Real focuses on authenticity and truthfulness.

What it describes

A team plans to build a new bridge. One engineer says it can be completed in six months at low cost. A more experienced engineer looks at the terrain, the weather, and the available workers. She says the project will take at least eighteen months and cost three times more. Her plan is not exciting, but it is possible. What kind of goal has the experienced engineer set? She has set a realistic goal.
