Shine

A janitor polishes the marble floor of a grand hall for hours. When he finishes, the surface reflects the chandelier light like a mirror. Visitors can see their own faces in the floor. It is not producing light of its own, but it is sending back every ray that falls on it. What does the polished floor do? It shines.

Shine means to give out or reflect bright light. Sparkle, by contrast, means to shine with small, quick, bright flashes, like a diamond or a star. So, shine focuses on a continuous, steady brightness. Sparkle focuses on broken, flickering, or twinkling light. In other words, a well‑polished car shines in the sun; a diamond ring sparkles under a light.
