Cause

Definition

Cause means a specific event or action that directly produces an effect. Determinant, by contrast, means a factor that decides the final outcome, especially when many possible causes are present. So, cause focuses on the direct trigger of an effect. Determinant focuses on the crucial factor that settles which outcome will happen. In other words, a cause starts the chain of events; a determinant is the deciding factor that makes one outcome happen instead of another.

What it describes

A factory releases toxic smoke into the air. Soon after, many people in the nearby town develop breathing problems. Doctors examine the patients and find no other explanation. The smoke is the direct reason people became sick. What is the smoke in relation to the illness? It is the cause of the illness.
